How do I know if my child is appropriate for a five week Conductive Education session?

Parents assisting on the first day. At Ability Camp we work with a wide range of children with motor disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, etc. We have different age groups ranging from one year to fourteen years with children having varying degrees of involvement. We take children that have difficulty in mobility, gross motor skills, fine motor manipulation and quite often there will be a carry over into speech.

In our group sessions we use teaching methods to work on therapy. Children that have the cognitive ability to understand and take an active part in the class will get the most enjoyment and usually make the most progress. We do work with children with cognitive involvement but parents should be aware that, as in any education, if your child has learning difficulties, than you would expect to see slower progress.

In a group setting it is also important for a child to be somewhat cooperative and be able to work with the Conductors. Many of the children we work with have seizure disorders and this is not be a problem as long as the seizures are reasonably controlled.

We would like to assess the children in person before the class but this is not possible for most families, as distances are too great. We also do assessments via video to enable the Conductor to assess your child's appropriateness for the program.

Last but not least, mostly what makes your child a good candidate for these programs is a parents intuition, who believes their child is capable of accomplishing more than what they are currently doing.
