In 1995 Ability Camp became the first year round Center for Conductive Education in Canada and only the second in all of North America. As with any new program we endured a considerable amount of growing pains along the way but this experience has helped us to improve and refine our programs and provide even better service. Our initial concept was simple, provide the best Cerebral Palsy therapy available, at an affordable cost. We also wanted to create a caring environment for not only the children but also a place that families could come and feel accepted. So often, even though we may live in large urban centers, we can still feel isolated, being the only one we know that has a child with a disability. Stresses placed on a family such as work, house cleaning and raising a family are now complicated by the extraordinary amount of time and patience required to raise a child with special needs. Doctors appointments, physical therapy, occupational therapy, Speech Pathologists, Orthotics and Schools all require our time. Parents feel over whelmed and also find it difficult to cope, believing that you are the only one that has these issues. Ability Camp is a place where families can share their thoughts, feelings and information freely with people that do have an idea of what it is like to walk a mile in your shoes. Our five week year round Conductive Education sessions, are available to children with Cerebral Palsy. They are designed to teach the children as much independence as possible. In our group settings we are able to use the friendships that the children form as a tool to motivate them. They can see that they are not the only one struggling to succeed. In an effort to keep the costs as low as possible, Ability Camp was located in a rural community, in a 7000 sq. ft. building accommodating our program and the living facilities for the families while they are here.
